Google is set to roll out a new version of Chrome next year. One that has a built-in feature for blocking intrusive and annoying adverts. Clearly, Google has no love for such pop-up adverts and are working to remove them from websites. This means advertisers, business owners, and marketers, should check the adverts on their site and determine if they fall under obnoxious and annoying. Many believe Chrome advert blocking is simply a means for Google to favour its own advert formats. But the tech giant’s priority has always been to provide users with a positive...

Facebook is adding a new feature that will allow publishers to add brand logos to article links that will appear in search results and trending news lists. (Photo by Facebook Media.) Instead of names beneath article headlines, publisher’s logos will be placed instead. The change may seem purely cosmetic, but Facebook hopes that this move will prevent users from falling for fake news. The company realised that people rarely recognise the publication behind news feeds and articles that appear on Facebook, thus the need for publishers’ logos to be added. In a company blog post,...

At 10:00 AM ET, the ability to leave local reviews on Google Maps started returning errors, such as "The Google Maps API server rejected your request….” (Screenshot from Google Maps listing. https://bit.ly/2uR1Mrz) The problem lasted for about 4 hours until Google managed to fix the bug. During the outage, people can’t post a review for a local listing. Some managed to do so, by repeatedly refreshing the page or clicking on “Write a Review”. Why the fuss on local reviews on Google Maps 4 hours may not seem a long time but translate to a loss for businesses and...

(Screenshot is taken from Google My Business. https://www.google.com/business/) In a recent study performed by Google, results showed that there is little correlation between traffic and influence where local search is concerned. While the focus on local SEO and SEM helps publishers to show up in search results, it may not have an influence on whether a user will choose or buy your business. Publishers and marketers need to create consumer experience to achieve influence, which can be done by matching content to the needs of a consumer or based on what they are looking...

Massive drops in CPC across Google AdSense caused a surge of panic among publishers. The decline was first noticed on August 5, causing a chatter in Twitter, Google AdSense Help, and WebmasterWorld. The cause is not a reporting glitch or interface bug, Google has confirmed, but ad buyers that were exploiting the ad system. Google has promptly blacklisted the culprits. In a statement given to Search Engine Land, Google acknowledged the issue of declining cost-per-click ads on a publisher’s website and identified the cause of the problem. “Several ad buyers were using...

Facebook has extended Dynamic Ads to real estate listings. From e-commerce sites to other industries, the social media giant has now included realtors in the list of businesses that can use dynamic ads retargeting. The new product will promote a property’s availability, price, and a number of bedrooms to anyone browsing a real estate site or app. Ads on Facebook and Instagram will be served to users searching home and apartment listings as part of retargeting. This variation of ads retargeting called Dynamic Ads for Real Estate works similarly to the Dynamic Ads for Retail and...

A new feature has been added to the new Google AdWords interface. This time, it is a new interaction option to adjust bids for calls, designed to get call extensions to show in mobile search ads. The bid adjustment specifically for calls provides insights as to how often or not call information appears in mobile search ads. It has a range of between -90% and +900%. (Photo by Search Engine Land. https://searchengineland.com/figz/wp-content/seloads/2017/07/adwords-call-bid-adjustments-582x600.png) In an announcement, Google explained that certain businesses may see higher order value...
